Avoiding Stress

The biggest problem with the question avoiding stress is actually being able to define the problem itself. Science defines stress as the result of failure to respond to any emotional or physical threat, be it real or imaginary. That being said there is no definite way for avoiding stress and measuring this problem. Most people experience some amount of stress and depression in family. this is usually attributed to a resultant deviation from their everyday routine. There are times though when these stress levels go to very high levels. Avoiding stress becomes crucial as it can trigger various other effects. The effects of elevated levels of stress can manifest in many ways like:-

•    Poor or disturbed sleep
•    Impatience or Irritability
•    Lack of concentration
•    Increased intake of alcohol or nicotine
•    Inability to relax
•    Constant feeling of being tense

Stress buildup has its own timelines depending on the situation. It could flare up quickly like when one is stuck in traffic and is running late for a meeting. It could worsen over a period of time like a long and difficult work project. Reducing stress can be done in various ways. The first way is to first address the fact that such a problem exists. Most people brush it off thinking its normal to feel stress and don’t realize that ongoing stress without proper attention will result in both physical and mental breakdown.

Reducing Stress

Ways for reducing stress- Start first by making a list, a stress list if you will. Put down all the factors and triggers that cause an increase in mental tension. Maybe even a journal can be maintained over the course of a few weeks to determine the factors which aggravated job stress levels. It is likely that a pattern will emerge pointing out the triggers which cause the stress in the first place. Maybe it is that horrible drive to and from work, maybe it is an annoying neighbor, whatever the cause may be you will be able to find out what affects you most.

Reducing Stress With Practical Solutions

Try some relaxation techniques. Deep breathing, meditation or Tai Chi is all forms of relaxation which will help calm the mind and energize the spirit. Take a break for a few minutes from your work and do some simple stretching exercise. Gets the blood flowing in areas of the body like neck and back which have become stiff from sitting for long periods in front of the computer.

Another way for stress relief is to take up a hobby. Pick a hobby which you enjoy doing – something with no deadlines to it and therefore no pressure of time. Music, painting, reading for pleasure, solving crossword puzzles are just some of the ways you can allow your brain to relax.

Admittedly sometimes these techniques for stress relief are not enough for some people who suffer from such high stress levels that don’t allow them to function normally on a daily basis. In such situations it is advisable to seek medical help and treatments in the form of anxiety management counseling, alternative medical therapies and appropriate medication for stress relief.
