Causes of depression: depression cannot be attributed to one single cause as in certain physical malfunctions. However, we can determine certain symptoms that can point out to be the reasons for depression.

Stress

Stress is a major cause for depression and is one of the prenatal depression symptoms. In today’s technological world, lifestyles have become complicated and the corporate man is stressed with pressure to perform and targets to achieve. His pride gets hurt if he cannot survive the competition and hence he becomes very stressed which again affects his ability. This vicious circle is one of the causes of depression. Past stress often termed as distal stress can also contribute to depression where a person is hanging on to a past incident which has hurt him/her like having an abusive parent etc.

Aging

Aging is one of the causes of depression especially when you are left to deal with it alone. Certain medical conditions like high blood pressure, stroke etc. can cause short term depressive disorders.

Personality

A person’s personality itself can be a reason for depression. If he is always pessimistic or hyperventilates often, then he/she can slowly develop non melancholic depression. We have over anxious personality, irritable personality, self-critical personality who has a low self-esteem, people who can’t take rejection, introverts who are loners, a bad loser and so on. At some stage events occur that make them depressive.

Treating Depression

Whatever be the reasons for depression it needs to be treated by consulting your local health care provider or it can leash to dangerous repercussions. Depression can lead to suicidal tendencies. Sometimes certain drugs while treating medical conditions are depression triggers. Corticosteroids, Cyclosporine, Dopar, Accutane, and some antidepressants can trigger depression. When the medicines are withdrawn the symptoms may eventually fade.

Can you tell if a person is depressed? Often it is very difficult to notice depression especially so because the changes are slow and don’t show. People who are depressed usually don’t reveal their feelings and is not something we can realize soon. Ultimately when the big changes occur we can identify a person as being depressed.
