Postnatal depression or baby blues is a mild temporary anxiety syndrome after the birth of a child.  It lasts for a few days or weeks. During this time a the mother experiences some symptoms like irritability, mood swings, anxiety, insomnia, sadness, crying etc. most often these symptoms go away but in some cases in can extend beyond two weeks causing severe mood swings, intense irritability and anger and not being able to bond with your baby. Causes of Postnatal Depression Physical, emotional as well as lifestyle changes cause postnatal depression symptoms.  After delivery, the estrogen and progesterone levels drop dramatically. This contributes to depression symptoms. The thyroid may also fluctuate making you very tried. Changes in blood pressure, metabolism and immune system can cause mood swings. Sleepless nights also mean looking tired and even less attractive.
