Teenage is a very difficult age, both for the teenager as well as for those around. Teenage is the age when children become physically adults, but mentally they are still kids. They are not able to control their hormones, and don’t know how to behave. They want to be treated like grownups but still think like children.
Reasons for teenage depression
Although this phase is not necessarily a reason for depression, many teenage kids do display depression symptoms for a number of reasons. For instance, depression information says that for girls it is predominantly to do with their appearance. This is the age when girls start becoming conscious about their bodies and the reason why many girls tend to get out of control is just because of their hormones combined with them trying out different things to find out which suits them. It is better for them to go through this phase than not to.
Differences between male and female teenage depression
Unfortunately many girls also do get into depression during this time. If they feel that they are a little overweight, that in itself is a reason for showing depression symptoms. Then comes peer pressure and if you think that it is nothing, you’re sadly mistaken.
This is also the age when many girls suffer through abuse. Most girls who are abused will display the classic depression symptoms that older women display. In fact loss of sleep as part of depression symptoms is a very strong indicator of abuse.
Boys on the other hand display depression symptoms in a different way. As per depression information many boys tend to get irritable and aggressive to cover their depression. They may also get into substance abuse, and although consuming alcohol is normal for this age, especially older teens, overdoing it is a strong indicator of depression.
For boys the reasons are different. Some may feel depressed because they are not as good as their peers in sports or studies or something else. Although abuse is lower among teenage boys than girls, this could be another reason.
Other problems that cause teenage depression
Problems in the family may also cause depression. There are some depression information studies that say that teenagers who have to go through a parental divorce have a very strong possibility of getting depressed because they will tend to blame themselves for their parents troubles.
The biggest problem with teenage depression is that of treating them. Many doctors just prescribe natural antidepressant pills or other stronger depression medication when it is dangerous to do so at this age. Many people may think that although depression medication is fatal on overdose, natural antidepressant pills are much safer. While this may be true, natural antidepressant pills also have their negatives, one among them being that you will have to be on them permanently.
Also getting addicted to depression medication is much higher at a young age, and this is why good doctors try to avoid prescribing depression medication except for the worst cases. Therapy is the best, and teenagers are remarkably resilient in that they are able to bounce back much faster than adults given half a chance.
